I have used the grid system when I first started to paint. My paintings were copies of photographs. It's a great tool for those of us who do not draw very well but it became an addiction to me. I now rough in with my brush and depend on instinct to paint. 

You must draw to learn to draw. Photos are great but are really not realistic in every aspect including color and proportion. One should syudy the photo carefully and adjust accordingly if you are looking for trueness in your subject.
